Meaghans totem pole This online memorial was created in loving memory of Meaghan Latone, whose life story is told throughout this memorial website. Please sign Meaghan's guest book and let Mike, Mia, Michael, all of Meaghans family & friends know you came to visit. We will remember Meaghan forever. Meaghan left her mark wherever she went. She had a contagious smile. She was always the first one to hold your hand and tell you it would be ok. Somehow she found the good in everyone. She had a soft touch, a strong backbone and a comfy shoulder that was always there if you needed it.
When she met her husband, Mike, she was 18 years old, she knew that she would marry him and she did marry him in 1997. All she wanted was children with him, the love of her life. Mia came in 1999 and Michael in 2002. If any married couple was going "to make it", it was them. They both honored their vows until cancer just cut their time together short. She learned she had nonsmoker's lung cancer in May of 2006. It was stage four and had already spread to some of her bones. She was ready for the fight of her life, and fight she did. She and Mike traveled around in order to find the right treatment for her. She found a treatment plan in her home town that she and Mike were comfortable with. She had chemotherapy and/or radiation for the next two years with her husband/hero by her side every step of the way. By this time the cancer had spread to her organs such as her brain and liver but she kept up the fight. She had things to live for she said. She was a solider with a huge army of friends and family behind her. We like to call ourselves her "VERIZON network", just like the commercial.
Instead of feeling sorry for herself or hiding in her bed, she got angry. She wrote a guest essay for the local newspaper in November of 2007 about November being Lung Cancer Awareness Month and how most people did not know this. She also made note that there are other cancers besides breast cancer and called for a Rainbow Ribbon Campaign. That very article was the reason we have Meaghan's Run today. The first annual 5K race/walk was held on April 12, 2008. It was a huge success and raised over $60,000 for lung cancer research. She did not keep a penny. She said that if she could help stop even one family from going through this she would be happy.
By August of 2008 the cancer in her liver was getting "unmanageable" the doctors said. She kept fighting. She found a Radiation Oncologist that thought she could help reduce the tumors or tumor in Meaghan's liver. She was to have approximately 10 treatments. She only made it through 5 before her liver function tests were off the charts. On Thursday August 14, 2008 she WALKED into a local hospice center. Over the next couple of days she and Mike were visited and supported by many of their loved ones. She died with her husband and children by her side and surrounded by friends and family on Saturday August 16, 2008. Her legacy will live on through her children and the innumerable amount of people that loved her.
