01-08-2008 12:59 PM -- By: Hillary Condon, From: San Diego, CA I just found this and it made me think of Grandma:
"When some people die, it's time to be sad. But when other people die, like really evil people, or the Irish, it's time to celebrate."
Jimmy Bender, "Greg the Bunny"

12-21-2007 1:12 PM -- By: Heather Castledine, From: I'm overwhelmed with the responses from everyone that Mom's life has touched. I thought I wouldn't be able to stop crying after reading how she has made such an impact on so many people. She was inspirational, vibrant, influential, fun, spiritual......she was everything you could wish for in a mother. She was always there when you needed to talk to her. I would call almost weekly for 2 hour chats just to catch up with the family and be able to discuss problems with her and she would listen without judgement. I already feel lost without her as I know that I can't just pick up the phone and talk to her. I miss her terribly but know that she can still hear me but that she won't have a sore ear after my long talks on the phone.

12-21-2007 4:53 AM -- By: Dianne Haist, From: Palmerston North NZ What a beautiful tribute to Hazel who was a very valuable person who in her dedication to people. Like her brother Gordy, who I have the pleasure of knowing in our poetry group here in Balmy Palmy, Hazel was a star in things that run deep and meaningful in life. I wish her family and friends all the best because without her, it must be pretty tough at his time.
Sincerely Dianne
12-20-2007 10:59 PM -- By: Connie LaMonte, From: Birmingham AL I love the photo of Hazel laughing with her two older daughters. This catches her energetic and fun-loving spirit. Hazel and I got to know each other when we were on SAYMA's Ministry and Nurture Committee together. Her insights, her sense of humor, her honesty, her ability to cut to the truth, her engaging manner -- all expressed her love of life and her integrity. I will miss her.

12-18-2007 3:31 PM -- By: Larry Ingle, From: Chattanooga I knew Hazel primarily through Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting and Association; I had visited Cookeville meeting, of which she was a member, and met her there also. At yearly meeting she was a regular at the early morning meetings for worship, and we got to know each other fairly well as we walked to breakfast afterwards. She had been a student at Pendle Hill, and I also knew her there.
She was a lively person, with interesting stories to relate, and yearly meeting was not the same when she was prevented from attending. I will miss her from now on.

12-18-2007 10:53 AM -- By: Hector Black, From: Jackson County TN Hazel, you're a humdinger and a rascal! I can still hear your laughter.
Remember the time we tried to talk to the Baptists who were picketing the gay church on Cedar St.? I can't help but smile when I think of how you and that minister kept raising the volume! I love your fierce defense, your fighting spirit against injustice.
You are the one who got us all started waving at passersby during our peace vigil at the Courthouse. And you shouted "Thank you!" to any who waved back or honked their horns.
How many times when we were talking theory in Friends Meeting discussion did you bring us down to reality. I love your grit, and down to earth sensibility.
I am so grateful to have known you, Hazel. Your courage and love will live on in me and so many others whose lives you touched.
Hector Black Cookeville, TN

12-16-2007 5:36 PM -- By: Susan McBride, From: Nashville How rare to meet someone who takes life as something to be created as one would will! My recall of Hazel is of a sassy lady whose opinions wouldn't be confusing to the listener. She made herself plain. Most every time I spoke with her there was mention of family. A fiercely loving mother, grandmother, and family woman overall. I had a dream where a train I was on was running along a track quite out of control. I made my way past friends and family who had been part of my entire life to see who was in charge of the train. Once I made my way to the engine I spoke to the engineer whose back was to me. Turning around it was Hazel. She was nonplussed at the speed of the train and assured me everything was fine. I went back into the other cars satisfied that all was well. The dream ended peacefully.
12-16-2007 5:33 PM -- By: Sue Garrison, From: Cookeville,Tn. I knew Hazel from the Cookeville Senior Center exercise class held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
